Whatever it takes!

Meeting on the the fourth Monday of each month in a local venue at 6.30pm for dinner at 7pm (apart from December, when we celebrate with a Christmas party!), we really do 'whatever it takes' - as shown here by our member helping the Club to recall the wonderful achievements of pioneering Zonta member, Amelia Earhart

The Club in action

In advancing the educational status of women, our club administers and finances a number of projects that support women in the local community, such as a Student Support Scheme and Study Grants that are awarded to women experiencing financial and other difficulties. We also regularly recognise local Women of Achievement.

International Women's Day is a particularly special event in our calendar, as Pittwater International Women's Day involves a breakfast close to 8th March which has become a significant local community event. It is often a celebration of advancing the professional status of women, as we ask a prominent woman to speak on her life journey, and our local Member of Parliament announces the Pittwater Woman of the Year.

In terms of working for the health status of women, we are great fans of the Zonta Breast Care Cushions and the Zonta Birthing Kits, both District 24 Endorsed Service Projects.

Zonta Breast Care Cushions are silk cushions made by members and friends and supplied to local hospitals to give to women who have undergone breast surgery. In a terrific joint effort, the cushions are sewn and stuffed by senior members of the community and Club members. So far over 500 cushions have been distributed to Mona Vale Hospital, North Shore Private, Manly Hospital and the San (Sydney Adventist Hospital).

Zonta birthing kit assemblyZonta birthing kits are distributed to women in developing countries under an education program with hospital support.

Each year 8000 kits are assembled with lots of community involvement and member fellowship.

Fundraising is obviously essential to these projects, but there is plenty to enjoy in that as well.

For example:

  • Marshalling at the Sydney Morning Herald half marathon. Members and friends are at an allocated position on the route of the race.
  • Volunteers at the Sun-Herald City to Surf. For the last few years members and friends have handed out the numbered bibs to race participants.
  • A Trivia Night is held once a year at a local venue. A minimal entry fee is charged and a supper is provided, a raffle is conducted, and we have some games.
  • Participation in organization of the local Newport and Forestville Australia Day Breakfasts.
