Next Event – Birthing Kit Packing Day – 27 July 2013
Our 5th annual Pre-Loved Fashion Sale was held in March and outstripped our fundraising goal again. Our Pre-Loved Fashion Sale provides the funds we use all year for our service and advocacy projects including our annual Birthing Kit Packing Day. Thank you to all who donated, shopped, and worked behind the scenes to make the day successful.
Would you fold plastic to save a babies life?
Come to our birthing kit packing day on Saturday 27 July where we will pack 3000 kits in support of mothers and babies in developing nations. We are looking for 200 people to help up fold plastic, count gauze and pack kits. To thank you, we’ll supply Canberra’s best afternoon tea. There are two sessions: 10am to prepare kit contents and 1pm for kit packing production line action. Venue is the hall at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Cnr Wattle and Brigalow Sts, Lyneham. Want to join us? Email us now.
The Club in action
We are supporting the women in Australia’s National Capital by providing funding and hands on service, to advance the status of women:
- educational & professional – PhD Top up Scholarship with Mt Stromlo Observatory, ANU: A $5,000 top up scholarship awarded annually to a female PhD candidate studying at the Mt. Stromlo Observatory to support her living expenses.
- health – by supporting Karinya House, a refuge and support centre for young mothers. Canberra Breakfast Club donates funds and works with Karinya on projects such as working bees at their homes, and supply of kitchen packs.
- professional & political – by conducting the Young Women in Public Affairs Award, a Zonta International programme for young women aged between 16 & 20, not yet at Uni, who do volunteer work in their local community. Club applications open in October each year. There is a $500 prize from the Club plus the chance to win at District and International levels. Email the Club for an official application form.
- health – by supporting two District 24 Endorsed projects. The Club makes Zonta Breast Care Cushions (read more) and Zonta Birthing Kits (read more). Sew, Stuff and Sip sessions are usually held three times a year and we make enough cushions so that every woman in the ACT region who needs a cushion gets a cushion.
